Estimates for the 2026 tax year using the standard deduction. Actual withholding depends on your W-4, benefits, credits, and local taxes. Not tax advice.
The most layered paycheck in America
California stacks more onto a paycheck than any other state in this series: nine income tax brackets reaching 12.3% (13.3% above $1 million with the mental-health surtax), a small standard deduction of about $5,540, and — unique among big states — the 1.3% SDI deduction on every dollar of wages with no cap. This calculator models all of it with 2026 figures, alongside federal tax and FICA.
What Californians actually take home in 2026
| Salary (single) | CA tax | SDI | Annual take-home | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $60,000 | $1,649 | $780 | $47,961 | $3,997 |
| $85,000 | $3,675 | $1,105 | $63,847 | $5,321 |
| $120,000 | $6,930 | $1,560 | $84,760 | $7,063 |
Note how progressive the state schedule is: the effective total tax rate climbs from 20.1% at $60,000 to 29.4% at $120,000. Compare the same salaries inTexas orFlorida — at $120,000 the gap is roughly $8,500 a year.
Quirks worth knowing before you plan
California’s brackets are inflation-indexed annually, so 2026 thresholds differ from what you may have seen for 2025. The state does not tax Social Security benefits, but it also doesn’t conform to federal HSA rules. If your income tops $1 million, the extra 1% mental-health surtax applies to the portion above the line. And because SDI has no ceiling, high earners now pay meaningfully more than they did before 2024 — there is no “maxing out” SDI anymore.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much tax does California take from my paycheck?
Three state-level bites: California income tax (nine brackets from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% surtax above $1 million), the 1.3% SDI payroll deduction on every dollar of wages, and — like everywhere — federal income tax and FICA. A single filer on $85,000 pays about $3,675 in CA income tax plus $1,105 SDI in 2026.What is CA SDI and why is it on all my wages?
State Disability Insurance funds disability and paid family leave. Since 2024 the wage ceiling is gone, so the 1.3% 2026 rate applies to your entire salary — a $200,000 earner pays $2,600. It’s an employee-side deduction your employer must withhold. What are California’s 2026 tax brackets?
For single filers: 1% to $11,079, 2% to $26,264, 4% to $41,452, 6% to $57,542, 8% to $72,724, 9.3% to $371,479, 10.3% to $445,771, 11.3% to $742,953 and 12.3% beyond — plus the 1% mental-health surtax above $1 million (13.3% top). Married-joint thresholds are roughly double.Does California have a standard deduction?
Yes, but it’s small: about $5,540 for single filers and $11,080 for married filing jointly in 2026 — far below the federal $16,100/$32,200. California also gives a personal exemption credit of about $153 per filer, which this calculator applies. Is 401(k) money taxed by California?
Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce both federal and California taxable income in the year you contribute. They do not reduce Social Security, Medicare or SDI, which are charged on gross wages. HSA contributions are trickier — California does not conform to federal HSA deductions. Are city taxes or bonuses handled?
California has no city income taxes on employees (unlike NYC), so no local layer is missing. Bonuses are withheld at a flat state supplemental rate during the year but settle at your normal bracket when you file — enter total annual pay including bonus for the truest picture. Is my salary stored anywhere?
No — the entire calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and the page works offline once loaded.
