Margins are either 0.5 inch (36 pt) or none. The three presets combine these:A4 Standard is A4 portrait with a small margin, Landscape Presentation is A4 turned sideways, and Fit to Image is edge-to-edge with no margin. The Fit to Image trap worth understanding

Fit to Image is the right choice for on-screen documents and the wrong one for print, becauseit treats each image pixel as one PDF point — and a point is 1/72 inch. A 3000 × 2000 photo therefore produces a page roughly 41 × 28 inches. It looks perfect in a viewer, which is why the problem goes unnoticed, but send it to a printer or upload it to a portal that validates page size and it will be rejected or scaled unpredictably. For anything official, choose A4 or US Letter.

Why image quality is preserved — and the one exception

On A4 or Letter the image is scaled to fit the page and centred, but scaling here only changes thedrawn size, not the data: the original file is embedded whole. A 4000-pixel-wide photo placed across 523 points of A4 keeps all 4000 pixels, which works out at roughly 550 dpi — far above print requirements. Images are also never enlarged, so a small screenshot stays crisp at its native size rather than being stretched.

The exception is WebP. The PDF format has no WebP support at all, so those files are re-encoded to JPEG at 92% quality on the way in — visually clean, but a genuine lossy step. BMP and GIF dropped onto the tool take the same route. If you have the choice, feed it JPG or PNG.

Getting official submissions accepted

Most rejections come down to three things, none of which are conversion problems:

Page order. Check the thumbnails before converting — a two-page contract in the wrong order is a resubmission.
File size. Nothing is recompressed during assembly, so the PDF is about the sum of its images. Portals capping at 2MB or 5MB will bounce a phone-camera set.
Legibility. Photograph documents flat in even light rather than at an angle. No PDF wrapper fixes a blurred or skewed scan.
